Today our founder, Emily, is sharing about her kid's involvement in the Sprout Children's Business Expo last year.
Spoiler: she highly recommends it!
What is your child’s name & what was their age when they did Sprout Children's Business Expo?
Quinn, 13 years old
Merra, 11 years old
(They were some of the oldest kids there)
What did your child sell at the Sprout Children's Business Expo?
Quinn sold Lego.
Merra resold clothing that she bought at thrift stores & garage sales.
What do you feel like your child learned by doing the Expo?
I feel like they both learned about preparing things ahead of time, looking at the calendar & planning, making things look good on a display, making prices clear to customers & looking people in the eye when talking to them. All amazing things that can be also used in daily life.
What was your favorite part about having your child involved in the Sprout Children's Business Expo?
It was fun to see them each working on something they love (Lego & clothing) & watching them interact with customers was great, too.
What was the hardest part?
Figuring out the balance between reminding them that they needed to work on their items ahead of time & letting them be motivated by their own desire to do the Expo.
What would you do differently?
I’m really trying to think, I feel like it was all around a really great experience. I wouldn’t say we did everything perfectly but there really wasn’t anything that sticks out that we would do differently. My kids both really loved it & they both felt very accomplished at the end of the Expo. Oh! I know! Always start doing stuff (making, pricing, packing) earlier than you think :)
What advice would you give someone who is considering doing the Sprout Children's Business Expo this year?
Let your kids try it & then let them decide if they want to do it again. Quinn loved it & has been planning for the next one. Merra enjoyed it but doesn’t want to do it again. I’m glad that they both had the experience & could decide. Also, I would say, decide how much time you want to be involved in the making & preparations & talk to your kiddo about that. It’s good for them to do some of the things on their own & for parents to let them. Kids have great ideas & this is such a neat way to let them try them out.
Do you have questions that we didn't ask?
